Trump Places 25% Tariffs on Canada and Mexico, Along With 10% on China

Donald Trump said yesterday the US would impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China from today, as Justin Trudeau warned of "difficult times" ahead as his country braced for the economic fallout of a trade war.

In a press briefing, the White House announced "25% tariffs on Mexico, 25% tariffs on Canada, and a 10% tariff on China for the illegal fentanyl that they have sent to our country, which has killed tens of millions of Americans," adding detail to pledges made by the US president on Thursday.

Earlier yesterday, the Canadian prime minister had promised to bring a "forceful but reasonable" retaliation to any tariffs imposed by the US.

"I won't sugarcoat it - our nation could be facing difficult times in the coming days and weeks," Trudeau said while speaking to an advisory council on Canada-US relations.

"I know Canadians might be anxious and worried, but I want them to know the federal government - and indeed, all orders of government - have their backs."

On Thursday, Trump said: "We'll be announcing the tariffs on Canada and Mexico for a number of reasons. Number one is the people that have poured into our country so horribly and so much.
