Enfield Oak Council threatens to sue owner of Toby Carvery

Enfield council, which had leased the land on which the tree stood for a Toby Carvery car park, yesterday signalled its plan to sue the restaurant chain.

It came after Mitchells & Butlers Retail (M&BR), which owns Toby Carvery, claimed the tree, which was felled on 3 April and is thought to be up to 500 years old, had to be taken down because it was "mostly dead and diseased" and posed a risk to the public.

The council leader, Ergin Erbil, said this was not true. He said: "We have evidence that this tree was alive and starting to grow new spring leaves when this action was taken. Our team of experts checked the tree in December 2024 and found it was healthy and posed no risk to the neighbouring car park and its users.

Raw milk, LED light treatment, tomahawk steak and a bafflingly large cuddly toy.
