Parts of town centre to disappear within weeks
South Wales Echo
|October 30, 2025
PLANS to demolish town centre buildings in Merthyr Tydfil to create a better link with the railway and bus stations are taking longer than expected.
On Tuesday, October 21, the council’s Sustainable Merthyr Tydfil scrutiny committee heard the demolition scheme was delayed due to the sensitive nature of the work.
Demolition has been taking place on the site at the bottom of town adjacent to Howfield’s and a council officer said completion was anticipated for the end of the year.
The council will then be looking at a scheme for the next financial year, subject to funding, which will look at public realm works, connecting bus and rail and some potential further building enhancement works in the area, as well as signs.
