NO SPLIT LOYALTIES FOR BETT WHEN IT COMES TO ICELAND

JIM BETT scored a priceless winner for Scotland against Iceland four decades ago.

And the former Rangers and Aberdeen midfielder hopes to be cheering on another victory against his adopted homeland when they pitch up at Hampden for tomorrow evening’s friendly.

Bett notched the only goal of his 26-cap international career in May 1985, his 86th-minute strike in Reykjavik securing a 1-0 win in World Cup qualifying.

It proved crucial in helping the Scots go on to reach Mexico 1986, although manager Jock Stein tragically died after the team’s next qualifier in Wales.

Bett now lives on the outskirts of Iceland’s capital and insists his wife Audur’s family were pleased for him, even if they were disappointed Scotland won all those years ago.
