The race could be on as councillors back plans for event study

Renfrewshire Council will look into the prospect of an organised cycling event in Johnstone town centre after the idea landed the backing of elected members.

A motion asking the local authority's events team to undertake a feasibility study into hosting a criterium in the area was unanimously agreed at Thursday's full council meeting.

A criterium - also referred to as a 'crit' - is a type of bike race popular across the United Kingdom which entails a number of laps around a closed circuit.

Councillor Andy Doig, an independent representative for Johnstone North and the surrounding villages, explained the background to the proposal which he had tabled alongside Councillor John Hood.
