City council to write off castle trust's £2m debt

NOTTINGHAM City Council has formally agreed to write off over £2 million owed to it by the failed operator of Nottingham Castle.

Nottingham Castle Trust first took control in May 2019 after a £31 million transformation.
The venue reopened in the summer of 2021 but, after just over a year of operation, with issues including complaints over ticket prices, the trust went into liquidation in November 2022 and the castle closed again.
The Labour-run city council provided loaned around £1.8 million to the trust and had £821,000 in unpaid invoices outstanding.
In a new report on its finances published on Monday, the council confirmed it had formally agreed to write off the debt.
