'Use less water' warning as dry spell sees reservoir levels drop

People in Lancashire are being urged to use less water after reservoirs were found to be lower than usual as the UK endures the driest start to a year since 1956.

In the North West of England reservoir levels sit at just 69 per cent full - compared to over 90 per cent at this time last year, according to water company United Utilities.

Over the past week the Environment Agency has revealed there was just 1mm of rain across region.

This is opposed to the three weeks ago when rain levels ranged from 6mm to 37mm.

Last week the Environment Agency urged water companies to do more to safeguard water supplies after the driest start to spring in 69 years. The environmental regulator convened a meeting of the National Drought Group and said more needed to be done to cut leakage and help customers use water more wisely.
