Drivers over 70 face fresh calls for road tests and eye checks

A third of British motorists believe drivers should be required to retake their driving test once they reach the age of 70, a new study has found.

According to research by The Green Insurer, 33% of drivers surveyed support mandatory test resits at age 70, as concerns mount over road safety in an ageing population.

An even larger group (46%) think that while a full test may not be needed, compulsory eye tests should be introduced for all drivers over 70. Only 17% of respondents believe no additional checks are necessary for older drivers.

However, the data shows a clear generational divide. Support for tougher measures is strongest among younger drivers, with 57% of those aged 34 and under backing mandatory retests. In contrast, only 11% of drivers aged 65 and above agree with retesting at 70.
