A Hamas delegation arrived in Cairo yesterday for urgent talks with regional mediators, amid a sharp rise in ceasefire violations in Gaza, intensifying friction just as the US-backed plan for Gaza's future enters a critical transition phase.

An Egyptian security official and a Hamas source confirmed the visit, with the Hamas official saying the group would raise Israel's "continued violation of the ceasefire agreement."

Tensions spiked on Saturday after a Palestinian gunman crossed the ceasefire line in southern Gaza and opened fire on Israeli troops, prompting retaliatory Israeli air strikes.
