A DESPERATE man with a small child on his shoulders wades chest-deep into the English Channel, hoping to reach the UK in a flimsy-looking inflatable.

The infant, in a floral-pattered coat, was among migrants who attempted the perilous journey from Gravelines beach in Calais at daybreak yesterday.
