Big day reminds us to fight hate

Before the Berlin Wall fell, I visited Leningrad, now St Petersburg, and saw something that really moved me.

At a war memorial, a just-married couple placed a bouquet next to an eternal flame, then stood silently with heads bowed.

It's a Russian tradition aimed at making young people remember, on the happiest day of their lives, the millions who paid the ultimate sacrifice to make that happiness possible.
