'It's a national embarrassment how transport services treat disabled people'

DISABLED people using public transport are treated like "second-class citizens" in a scandal that shames the nation, an MP says.

The Commons transport select committee found there was a “substantial gap” between the rights of disabled people using the network and their daily experience.

MPs were told of wheelchair users left on planes, taxi drivers refusing lifts to people because they have an assistance dog and street clutter causing obstructions.

People with invisible disabilities such as autism, dementia and severe anxiety said they are discouraged from travelling by poor reliability and a lack of assistance.
