DOGGED war veterans have forced the Government to cough up for battlefield pilgrimages in a stunning final victory.

- Giles Sheldrick

'I am determined to be in Normandy and the Netherlands I haven't forgotten the comrades we lost and I never will'

The indomitable heroes and your campaigning Daily Express secured a promise to fund what is likely to be a valedictory salute next year.

Only a handful of Second World War bravehearts will be fit enough to travel to the Continent as the many become the few.

And now, for what could be one last time, they will be able to honour those who fell fighting for freedom.

D-Day warrior Ken Hay, 100, said: "I will go back to Normandy as long as I am fit and able to do so.

"We are the lucky ones who returned home so many made the supreme sacrifice. While we can, we will always salute them." It is thought just 12 veterans will travel to Holland to mark the 81st anniversary of Dutch Liberation in May and the 82nd anniversary of the Normandy Landings in June. Most will be at least 100 years old.

The cost of the trips, including bed and board, a carer for each veteran and medical assistance, is estimated to be at least £250,000.

It is a significant sum for the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans and the Spirit of Normandy Trust, the organisations escorting them which exist entirely on public donations.

The veterans' last hurrah - 81 years after the end of the war will see them honour the many who perished.
