NEW MONUMENT AT NATIONAL MEMORIAL ARBORETUM HONOURS VICTORIAN TRAINING SHIP STORY

- By JOSEPH RICHARDS

'The memorial stands as a testament to the eduring impact of transforming young lives'

A NEW tribute at the National Memorial Arboretum has been dedicated to a Victorian training ship for young boys.

The Arethusa gave thousands of boys a disciplined education, maritime training, and a new start in life.

Now, its history is honoured in a new memorial at the Alrewas site which pays tribute to a story that began in 1874 when the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury acquired HMS Arethusa, built in 1846, to rescue destitute boys from London's streets and train them for a life at sea.

The dedication was led by the Right Honourable Nicholas Ashley-Cooper, 12th Earl of Shaftesbury, in honour of his great-great-grandfather's legacy.

Nicholas said: "It is a profound honour to see a memorial dedicated to the boys and staff of TS Arethusa at the National Memorial Arboretum.
