Gamble paid off for scouts with bonfire and winter fair

STRETTON Scout Group was thriving in November 1982 and much of the success was pinned on a winter fair and bonfire.

Holding the event was a huge gamble but one which paid off.

Speaking in 1982, scout leader Malcolm Goode said: “We bought £200 worth of fireworks for the evening's display and needed a good crowd to make it pay.

“You have to speculate to accumulate but thankfully the amount raised from the display was £370 - well above my expectations.”
