Prospect of inquiry into city council's financial crisis fades

A GOVERNMENT minister has said it's time for Birmingham to “look to the future” as the prospect of a public inquiry into the city council's financial crisis is seemingly ruled out.

Since the authority effectively declared itself bankrupt back in September 2023, there have been calls from opposition councillors for an inquiry to establish how things went so disastrously wrong for the council.

The impacts of the turmoil at the Labour-run council have been unprecedented and affected every resident in the city, sparking a huge wave of cuts to local services and hikes in council tax.
