THE leader of Birmingham City Council has spoken out after four of his councillors quit The Labour Party.

Releasing a series of scathing resignation letters on Sunday, the four took aim at the party's leadership both locally and nationally, citing national and foreign policy and the selection process for the upcoming election.

Cllrs Mohammed Idrees (Alum Rock), Chaman Lal (Soho and Jewellery Quarter), Amar Khan (Stockland Green) and Rinkal Shergill (Holyhead) all quit Labour.

Council leader Cllr John Cotton responded: “I'm disappointed these councillors have chosen to take this step. Our focus remains firmly on delivering for the people of Birmingham.

“Working hand in hand with our Labour mayor and Labour Government, we're already turning the tide after 14 years of Tory decline.
