DERBYSHIRE'S library service is ensuring it is fit-for-the-future by remaining at the heart of the communities it serves, as a raft of new measures announced at the start of the year make positive progress.

Since the new approach was launched, the county council's library service has been busy implementing the first phase of the five-year plan, with the strong progress detailed in a report to be discussed by the council's cabinet tomorrow (Thursday). Due to the council's financial position, savings of £910,000 were integrated into the strategy to be achieved in a phased programme, while other aims include reflecting changing patterns of library use and ensuring the service is sustainable and remains as accessible, flexible, efficient and cost-effective as possible for future years.

Derbyshire County Council cabinet member for health and communities Councillor Dawn Abbott said: “We absolutely recognise the importance of a strong library service across Derbyshire and we know how valuable each library is to its community.
