There was widespread shock among Sunrise staff and viewers alike when sports anchor Mark Beretta announced his imminent departure from the show.

“After 30 years with the Seven Network and after a lot of long nights thinking about it, the time is right for me to step away,” Beretts, as he’s universally known, shared on November 27. “Working in this job and in sport has been my dream.”

Beretts, 59, explained that he was stepping away from Brekky Central – December 12 will be his last broadcast – to spend more time with his family, particularly his mother Joan, who has cancer.
