In the West Australian Ballet's Butterfly Effect, a metamorphosis of the iconic Puccini opera Madama Butterfly takes flight
-

WHEN AWARD-WINNING choreographer Alice Topp pitched a contemporary take on the 1904 opera Madama Butterfly, she was met with trepidation. “Immediately my hackles went up,” recalls David McAllister, the West Australian Ballet's guest artistic director.
“I was worried about the criticism we'd receive because when you look at Madama Butterfly through the lens of modern society, it’s got some dubious cultural appropriation.
It wasn't until I read Alice’s synopsis for Butterfly Effect that I understood her idea and how brilliant it was.”
For those who haven't seen Giacomo Puccini's famous tragedy
