Opportunities beckon for red meat producers despite a challenging year
Stockfarm
|July 2025
The past year has been challenging for South African producers, but the recent annual congress of the Red Meat Producers’ Organisation in the North West (RPO North West) held in Lichtenburg, highlighted several promising prospects and opportunities.
During the congress, Nico Kilian was reelected as chairperson. In his address, he acknowledged the difficulties faced by producers, including drought conditions until early this year, low meat prices, high interest rates, a stagnant economy, and rising feed costs. These factors have not only dampened consumer demand but also compelled producers to implement cost-cutting measures.
Despite these challenges, the market is showing signs of recovery. Slaughter and weaner calf prices are on the rise and recent rainfall has provided much-needed relief, offering a more optimistic outlook for the industry.
Grassroots involvement
Kilian emphasised the critical role of grassroots involvement. Danie de Villiers, recently reelected as vice-chairperson, has been actively involved in agricultural associations, auctions, and government institutions since January. His efforts aim to enhance the presence of RPO North West at the grassroots level. Kilian reiterated the importance of active participation by RPO delegates in agricultural associations, highlighting the need to establish a strong grassroots footprint.
He also urged producers to prioritise disease control, as foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), brucellosis, trichomoniasis, and vibriosis continue to pose risks to herd health in the province. Regular herd and bull testing are essential preventive measures. Although North West was declared FMD-free in March 2024, Kilian cautioned against complacency, citing recent outbreaks in Gauteng and Limpopo. Strict biosecurity protocols, access control, and effective communication among neighbouring farms to safeguard livestock health is ongoing.

Trust and muffins lead the way
In any business, communicating in silos is the main cause of issues among managers. With only three of us managing things, myself on sheep, Gert on vehicles and Mbali on payments, breaking through our silos is easy. Twice a week we hold short morning meetings to report progress and problems towards our goal of turning grass into sheep for profit.

Santa's new team
Last December, we warned Santa Claus of the perils of visiting South Africa with his team of reindeer. We cautioned him about the biological hazards his reindeer might bring into the country, and the import tariff issues he might encounter when trying to bring in all those gifts. We also elaborated on the heat and other environmental challenges his team might face. But we also told him about our friendly farmers and the braais he might be invited to, complete with a beverage of his choice.

The effect of iucerne hay quaiiiy on feedlot lambs
Lucerne hay is one of the most widely used roughage sources for ruminant diets, largely due to its reputation for providing high-quality nutrition. Important considerations for producers who use lucerne hay in their feed programme include assessing the true value of lucerne hay, determining the most suitable grade for specific feeding purposes, considering its cost, and balancing these factors against optimal feedlot performance.

Wireworm management in small stock
Years of indiscriminate dosing have eliminated weaker wireworms, allowing resistant populations to dominate and spread through flocks. Wireworms typically hatch following good rains and warm nights. When larvae move up the green grass, they are ingested by grazing sheep. About 20 days later, the worms begin sucking blood, leading to anaemia and, in severe cases, death.
