Escape to a bygone era by visiting a countryside castle. The outskirts of Johannesburg are home to no less than three castles, two of which offer guest accommodation, says Linda Piegl.
Where I live, in the 'last countryside outpost' of Johannesburg's northern suburbs, there's a certain fascination with castles. Within an area of less than 30km², there are three distinct castles, each with its unique charm and purpose.
The most famous by far is Castle Kyalami, set imposingly on a ridge. Built in 1992 by a Greek tycoon and architect as a private residence, this stone-clad fortress features the requisite turrets and arched windows, as well as a Greek fountain.
FAIRY-TALE APPARITION
The sprawling interiors blend modern luxury with Old-World romance and include wrought-iron chandeliers, balustrades, and marble finishes. This fairy-tale apparition takes up some 1 000m².
After being acquired by a hotel group, the castle had been transformed into a tourist attraction and an upmarket dining destination.
