Danish political drama Borgen had a perfectly timed arrival on BBC4 in 2012. As the UK was still finding its feet with its first coalition Government in over 60 years, the fictional story of Denmark's first female prime minister attempting to navigate the country's multi-party system with compromising her principles struck a chord with British viewers.

Over the course of three seasons, Prime Minister Birgitte Nyborg (Westworld's Sidse Babett Knudsen) of the Moderate from opponents Party endured attacks and allies alike, as well as the breakdown of her marriage to husband Phillip, her daughter Laura's mental-health struggles, and her own treatment for breast cancer.
