Staring at myself in the mirror, I could’ve screamed. ‘This isn’t what was meant to happen,’ I sobbed to my partner, Matthew. He’d heard it a hundred times before, but he still gave me a cuddle. ‘You’re beautiful,’ he told me. I was sure he must have been lying. With my rolls of saggy skin that had red, raw rashes beneath the folds, and boobs that had gone from a 42H to a 32 nothing, of course I was hideous. It shouldn’t have come as a surprise, not after everything my body had been through.

The women in my family are all big boned. By the time I was 17, I was 5ft 10in tall and thought carrying a few extra pounds was simply the way I was supposed to be. ‘It’s right for my height,’ I always told myself. But after turning 23, I started gaining weight – and a lot of it. I didn’t know why but guessed I’d just been overindulging. Like most girls in their 20s, I could easily knock back a few glasses of white wine on a Friday and Saturday night, and I’d scoff a bar of chocolate a day. But even when I started to cut back, it didn’t make a bit of difference. Within a month I’d gone up a dress size to an 18, and no amount of exercise or dieting would shift the pounds. By now I was a dental assistant and I had to wear a uniform. To my horror, it kept getting tighter and tighter.
