From strength to strain: India's GDP challenges in FY26

The National Statistics Office (NSO), under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India, recently released data indicating that India's economy grew by an impressive 7.4% in the January-March quarter (Q4) of fiscal year 2024-25 (FY25). This strong performance contributed to an overall annual GDP growth rate of 6.5% for FY25. Standardized KYC framework — The need of the hour

Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman seems to have hit the nail on the head. She recently expressed deep concern over the large volume of unclaimed financial assets lying idle in the system—arising from unclaimed bank deposits, insurance and mutual fund payouts, pension settlements, and more. Over the years, various entities across the BFSI (Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance) sector have accumulated these unclaimed amounts and subsequently transferred them to their respective regulators.

World economies race to sign FTAs, but are they enough to deliver results?

In recent years, India has been actively pursuing Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with various countries and trade blocs. So far, it has signed around 13 FTAs, varying widely in their scope and objectives. However, many observers remain skeptical about their effectiveness. Between 2017 and 2022, India’s exports to FTA partners grew by 31%, while imports surged by 82%. Furthermore, India’s FTA utilization rate remains low at just 25%, compared to 70-80% in developed countries (RN Choudhury, East Asia Forum, 19 September 2023). This underlines the importance of critically evaluating the upcoming FTAs India is set to sign.

More Israel-Iran conflict means bad times for Indian economy

More than 80% of India's oil requirements come from the Middle East, majorly from Iran. After the US bombing of Iran's nuclear plant sites, Iran has announced to block the Hormuz passage of the Persian Gulf which is expected to severely affect international transportation of oil. This will shoot up the oil prices, and add up to inflation. Hormuz blockage continues, in spite of the call for ceasefire.
