There is nothing to say that resolutions we make on Jan 1 are destined to be more effective than those made on June 22, or March 9, or Sept 3. Yet, every year, we tell ourselves that a mere change in the calendar year means that promises we have made to ourselves or our loved ones have a better chance of coming true. If December is a time of rest (for some of us, anyway) it is only fair that January marks a revival of sorts. As Malaysians, we have more right to celebrate—we also welcome the start of the Lunar New Year at the end of January, heralding the Year of the Snake. After all, the 2025 element, wood, lends the snake’s traits greater versatility, growth, and creativity. This issue features some excellent festive content—snake-themed watches, Lunar New Year fashion, and delectable eats to welcome the season. In other news, klpac’s artistic director Joe Hasham and general manager Ian Chow outline plans for the arts centre’s 20th anniversary, while our cover personality, Miller Khan, describes what drives him as an actor, husband, son, and sibling. We travel to Taiwan for Loro Piana, Seoul for Rolls-Royce and &Beyond; Ngala in South Africa for adventure. Michel Parmigiani’s birthday watch comes under the spotlight, as do stunners from Tudor, Roger Dubuis, Richard Mille and Bell & Ross. At the crossroads of drink and design is Mortlach’s collaboration with architect Philippe Starck, ungendered jewellery from Cartier and Dior take centrestage and we also explore the joy in local homeware outfit SAD Studio. We don’t do obvious themes here at AUGUSTMAN, but this month does seem very hopeful—a lovely way to start the year. There is no way to predict how 2025 will pan out, all we can do is approach it with positivity and a generous dose of cautious optimism. May the odds be in your favour.
