We’ve arrived at December’s doors ushered by a rash of less than positive news in the luxury scene. Industry leader LVMH reported a three per cent decline in the third quarter, marked by a five per cent drop in its crucial fashion and leather goods division, which generates nearly half of group revenues. Meanwhile, the Richemont Group reported a two per cent increase in sales for jewellery maisons Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels, but watch sales fell by 17 per cent. Asia Pacific saw an 18 per cent decline due to weaker consumer confidence in China, partially offset by growth in Japan, the Americas, and Europe. There’s even talk that we are easing into a recession worse than the one we faced in 2008/2009. I’ve always believed a credit crunch shouldn’t stifle creativity; despite global challenges, we must celebrate and keep moving forward. Our annual Men of the Year initiative embodies this spirit.
