Why is sex TABOO?

It's time to talk about getting intimate – even if you don't find the conversation easy

Why is sex TABOO?

Midlife. A stage where you feel more confident and can embrace what you want and don’t want, especially in the bedroom – right? Wrong! Even though we should be more assured as we age, changes in our body can instead cause embarrassment when it comes to intimacy.

‘Many of us are from a generation where sex is considered “private”, which can exacerbate feelings of shame and awkwardness,’ explains love, sex and intimacy coach Sarah Rose Bright (sarahrosebright.co.uk). ‘But we need to let those feelings go and be more comfortable and curious about what feels good to us now.’ Here’s what you need to know.

Never assume you’re missing out

Reckon you're the only one doing it less than once a month? You won’t be. ‘Don’t assume or compare your sex life to others,’ says Sarah. ‘It just leads to incorrect assumptions. When it comes to sex, there is no “normal.”’

EMBRACE IT Focus on quality. ‘If you’re doing it once a week, once a month or even once a year, that’s fine – just make sure you’re enjoying it when you do,’ says Sarah. Explore what feels good to you now and have an honest conversation with your partner about it.

Why it's never too late to get in shape

Getting in shape - what does that even mean? Well, to me it means this: working at achieving a good muscle mass to body fat ratio (that you, personally, are happy with). Plus, well-supported joints, good bone density, a high level of strength (to avoid future injury, improve balance and boost metabolic health) and a good diet to fuel both your activities and a healthy gut (a flourishing microbiome rules our health!).
