When to worry about bloating

Often, the hardest thing about being a GP is sifting through nonspecific symptoms to find the serious illness lurking beneath.

Bloating is one of these symptoms - it can be harmless and is extremely common, but it can also be a sign of something more serious.

One of the most common causes of bloating that affects most people at some point is excess gas - dietary fibre in food, such as beans, fizzy drinks and the breakdown of artificial sweeteners, can play a part.

Why it's never too late to get in shape

Getting in shape - what does that even mean? Well, to me it means this: working at achieving a good muscle mass to body fat ratio (that you, personally, are happy with). Plus, well-supported joints, good bone density, a high level of strength (to avoid future injury, improve balance and boost metabolic health) and a good diet to fuel both your activities and a healthy gut (a flourishing microbiome rules our health!).
