Safety measures after hospital virus outbreak
Western Mail
|January 19, 2026
A HEALTH board has introduced safety measures at a hospital to try to tackle the outbreak of norovirus there.
The Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport
(Rob Browne)
Aneurin Bevan University Health Board said on Friday that 90 patients and 28 staff members at Royal Gwent Hospital were affected by the vomiting bug.
It has introduced “visiting with a purpose” measures at the hospital in Newport. It says the decision has “not been taken lightly” and it was a necessary measure to protect the health of patients and staff.
The health board has asked people to contact the ward before attempting to visiting. It says visitors who arrive without prior contact may be turned away.
