Community hospital celebrates 95 years of service

Falmouth Community Hospital first opened its doors to the public on April 26, 1930, after being generously paid for by William Mountstephens, of Falmouth, and Albert Charles Collins, of Stithians, who were both living in Johannesburg, South Africa at the time.

It has provided vital care to the local community and surrounding areas ever since.

The hospital was built on a new site in Falmouth on Trescobeas Road, replacing the old Seamen's Hospital, which was built in 1750.

It is believed that Falmouth Community Hospital was originally built for ophthalmology and war patients.

The hospital was a gift from William Mountstephens and friend Albert Charles Collins, for which both were recognised in 1931 as Freeman of the Boroughs of Falmouth And Penryn.

Rebecca Tica, matron at Falmouth Community Hospital, said: "The building itself is a listed building. It has a level of grandeur.
