Why 90% of South Africans choose Ride-Hailing apps over public transport

A NEW Ipsos Safety Index report, commissioned by ride-hailing platform Bolt, shows that South Africans are increasingly turning to technology-driven mobility for safety, with 90% of users considering ride-hailing a safer option than traditional public transport.

The findings highlight a major shift in how South Africans navigate the country’s ongoing safety challenges, positioning ride-hailing as a trusted part of everyday life.

Ride-hailing has evolved far beyond convenience, for many, it has become essential. The study found that young adults aged 25 to 34 make up 43% of users, relying on the service for commuting, social outings, and late-night travel.

The report shows that 90% of riders choose ride-hailing because they feel safer than when using buses or taxis, particularly at night, when travelling through unfamiliar areas, or when returning from social events.
