'I want to reassure students that we take their safety seriously'
The Journal
|September 25, 2025
THE Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) has made the safety of university students a 'top priority' as thousands arrive in region at the start of a new academic year.
Susan Dungworth is working with Northumbria Police to send a clear message to those beginning their journeys in the North East.
In Newcastle, a key part of the support in place during Freshers' Week and beyond is the Safe Haven Van, which will be parked in the heart of the Bigg Market at peak times or when events are taking place in the city centre.
The safety hub is funded through the PCC's office, and it provides a safe, supportive space for anyone who finds themselves in difficulty during a night out.
This could be feeling unwell, losing friends or just needing help getting home, with the van there for anyone who is feeling vulnerable.
This just one of a raft of plans which sees the PCC work alongside Newcastle and Northumbria Universities, the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS), Newcastle City Council and the dedicated Street Pastors, to provide support and a safe space.
