Defence review unveiled as war rages on the edge of Europe

- KATE DEVLIN

UK to build arms factories in response to Russia threat

Ministers are to spend £1.5bn to build at least six ammunition and weapons factories, as they respond to Russia's attack on Ukraine. The plans will form part of a war-ready - or "always on" - pipeline that is able to scale up at short notice.

Making the announcement ahead of a new defence review set to be published tomorrow, defence secretary John Healey said the “hard-fought lessons” of Vladimir Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine “show a military is only as strong as the industry that stands behind them”.

Any hidden gems in eastern Canada that we should see?

Q My wife and I are off to Canada in 10 days' time for two weeks. Landing in Montreal, our only set agenda is going to Nova Scotia for a few days to see friends, so we are favouring eastern Canada. We've rented an SUV, and done the normal research using Lonely Planet. Have you any secret gems of landmarks, locations, driving routes, hotels or restaurants you would recommend?
