Harris campaign coffers continue to swell as Republicans lambast her as 'dangerous'
The Guardian
|July 29, 2024
Republicans have lambasted Kamala Harris as a "dangerous" and "major league" liberal as they sharpen their line of attack against the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.
As the US vice-president's campaign revealed it had raised $200m (£155m) in funding since Joe Biden announced just over a week ago that he would not be standing for reelection, senior conservative figures lined up on US chatshows to paint Harris - typically seen as a centrist Democrat -as having far-left politics.
Those remarks came after Donald Trump sought to insult Harris at a rally on Friday night. The expresident appeared to deliberately mispronounce Harris's first name, claimed she was "the most incompetent, unpopular and far-left vice-president in American history" and stated: "She was a bum three weeks ago."
Tom Cotton, a senator from Arkansas, speaking to CNN's State of the Union yesterday, said of Harris: "Just look at her record. She wants to ban private health insurance, she wants to ban fossil fuel production, she wants to ban guns."
In 2019, Harris did propose a universal healthcare plan during her run for president. But the plan did not propose eliminating private health insurance. Harris has not said she wants to ban fossil fuel production.
And it is untrue that Harris wants to ban all guns, although she has said high-capacity rifles - used in many US mass shootings - should be banned.
