BEST OF THE WEST
The Chronicle
|September 23, 2025
VIBE Back in the flat Earth days, Portugal’s Algarve was believed to be the edge of the world.
The Moors called it Al-Gharb - “the west” - an unforgiving coastline of terracotta cliffs and crags hewn by the merciless Atlantic.
Oceanic battle scars honed the region, on the southwestern tip of the Iberian peninsula, into something exceptionally beautiful.
Then, in 2022, came the clifftop W Algarve Hotel: five-star tranquility and equilibrium taming nature's furies in sumptuous style.
Marriott-owned, this sprawling resort, just 40 minutes from Faro airport, is true to the worldwide W brand, with an upbeat, cosmopolitan vibe.
It is a hub for live music, poolside DJ sets, clifftop parties and art exhibitions that attract both locals and travellers. The edge of the world with an edge.
It is luxurious without being stuffy, mixing wellness with indulgence. Its motto (it has a motto!) is Whatever, Whenever, encouraging guests to dream big.
This could be a midnight picnic or a private yoga session at sunrise, - y'know “whatever”.
If you can think of it, it’s yours via a bespoke concierge service.
STYLE
Bold, contemporary aesthetics are inspired by the region’s culture and natural elements.
Expect bright, sun-washed interiors mixed with traditional Portuguese pottery and marine-themed textures.
West-facing rooms and penthouses - graded “Wonderful”, “Fabulous’, “Spectacular”, “Wow” and “Mega Marvellous” - feature expansive terraces.
Some have private gardens, while those at the top of the pile have private plunge pools.

No escaping your fitter enemy
EVERY new show needs a great opening. Something to forcefully grab the viewer's attention and maintain that vice-like grip for the next hour or so. The producers of Handcuffed: Last Pair Standing must have been rubbing their hands with glee when they saw the rough cut of this first episode: a glimpse of the countryside, a nice burst of birdsong, sounds of a man and a woman laughing and then... two people naked in a shower. Goodness me, and it's only just past the watershed too.
