Sunderland Echo
|April 30, 2026
Tributes have been paid to the Sunderland mastermind behind the Tyne and Wear Metro after his death at the age of 92.
Professor Tony Ridley at the opening of the Northumberland Park Metro station.
Professor Tony Ridley, who also managed the London Underground, has been described as a “pioneering engineer”.
He was director general of the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive (PTE) from 1968 to 1975 and was part of a team of visionary planners who devised the Metro network.
He oversaw the planning process, the award of funding and the first year of construction work in 1974 ahead of its eventual opening in 1980.
