Town prepares to mark VE Day 80th anniversary

RESIDENTS across Stockport will join celebrations for the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) this week, reflecting on the moment the Second World war came to an end on the continent.
Public events are planned in the borough for the momentous occasion, which is marked on May 8.
The VE Day flag will be flying outside Stockport town hall from May 5, and stay there for the week.
A tea dance will be held at Stockport town hall from 1pm to 4pm on Wednesday, May 7, and this will be open to the public.
On May 8, the armed forces community with standard bearers will meet outside St George's Church at 6.30pm for a parade, but there will be no service taking place.
The parade will begin alongside church bells ringing out for 30 minutes across the country, starting at the same time.
