Blaise Metreweli said the Kremlin continues “dragging out” peace negotiations in Ukraine and is “testing us in the grey zone with tactics that are just below the threshold of war”.

Ms Metreweli, 48, in her first public engagement as “C”, warned of the growing power of social media firms, saying some internet algorithms could “become as powerful as states”. The Cambridge graduate and first female MI6 chief said: “Our world is more dangerous and contested now than for decades.
