WHEN it comes to history documentaries, having a decent presenter can make all the difference.

By “decent”, I don’t mean someone who’s kindly kept their clothes on, although I'd prefer it if they have, but someone who’s knowledgeable and engaging. Someone with “a passion” for their subject, to quote that dismal expression people now feel obliged to trot out in job interviews.

Take tonight’s big one, DAN SNOW & THE LOST CITY (5, 9pm).

It’s a 90-minute special about Machu Picchu, the ancient metropolis of the Inca, high in the Andes mountains of Peru.
