Confidence edges up at end of year after Budget clarity

BUSINESS chiefs are more confident going into 2026 after fears of yet more tax raids in the Budget were allayed.
Mothercare's emergency loan can now be recalled at any time SHARES in retailer Mothercare plunged by 10% yesterday after the group cast "significant doubt" over its future. In a trading update it said it had breached its emergency loan agreement. The firm was due to repay an £8m loan from lenders Gordon Brothers in October 2026. It had been a rescue package to help make Mothercare's £19.5m debt more manageable. Gordon Brothers' safety rule meant Mothercare must always have at least £2.6m in cash. But the firm now has less than that, meaning the loan has become "repayable on demand". Mothercare suffered a 25% drop in sales in the first half of the financial year.
