'Chernobyl' has gone but Port Glasgow still named most dismal Scots town

THE infamous Carbuncle Awards have been reinstated after a decade away, with Port Glasgow named as Scotland’s “most dismal” town — an accolade dubbed the Plook on the Plinth.

Architecture journal Urban Realm scrapped the awards after criticism they were causing harm to struggling towns, such as past winners Cumbernauld, Glenrothes and John O’Groats.

But editor John Glenday said he hoped that bringing them back would encourage councils to think more carefully about urban redevelopment, with Port Glasgow singled out due to the demolition of Clune Park an abandoned housing scheme dubbed “Scotland’s Chernobyl”.
