Mercury plummets towards coldest night for 20 years

- BY PAUL DRURY AND RICHARD ELIAS

Snowvember chill

SCOTS shivered last night as the mercury plunged towards its lowest November temperature for 20 years.

The Met Office yesterday forecast a chilling minus 13C (8F) - at a time when double-digit freezing temperatures are not the norm until later in December or January.

Forecasters said that last night was expected to be the coldest in the Highlands since the same date in November 2004.

Snow and ice continued to wreak havoc on roads and schools yesterday in the north, where yellow weather warnings were in place.

Almost 100 schools closed in Aberdeenshire alone.
