'Bigots and racists won't win' police tell victims

THE Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has promised the victims of the ongoing violence which has blighted the province over the past days that "bigots and racists will not win."
Jon Boutcher was speaking after three nights of rioting engulfed towns and cities across Ulster.
Almost 50 PSNI officers have been injured so far in the disturbances, leading to reinforcements from the mainland being sent over to help their colleagues.
Among them are several dozen from Police Scotland.
It began in Ballymena, County Antrim after two Romanian teen agers were charged in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a young local girl.
Homes housing asylum seekers have been firebombed and hostels where refugees have been placed were also targeted.
Trouble has since spread across Northern Ireland, including its biggest city, Belfast.
At a press conference yesterday afternoon, Mr Boutcher said those targeted had been "hiding in attics and hiding in wardrobes. They have done nothing wrong.
"They are not criminals. They contribute to society here and are well-integrated.
They are valued members of society in Northern Ireland."
He promised: "We stand shoulder to shoulder with you.
"We are here to protect you.
"We are your police service and these bigots and racists will not win the day."
