Schoolboy, 11, in fight for crossing after near-misses

William Cartwright, 11, created the petiiton to put in the safety measure on Burnley Road in Bacup after ‘nearly being hit several times’ due to cars travelling ‘very fast’ on the road.

The Bacup Thorn Primary School student has to use the road to get to school and has raised his concerns to MP for Rossendale and Darwen, Andy MacNae.

The petition, which has racked up more than 200 signatures, reads: "My name is William, I am 11-years-old and go to Bacup Thorn Primary School.

"Every day, with my two younger brothers and my friends, I have to cross the Burnley Road to get to school. As this is a main road cars travel very fast and we often have to run across the road.

"I have nearly been hit several times.

"Vulnerable residents of Underbank, which is sheltered accommodation, also have to cross this road to get to the Spar, which is the nearest shop.
