MURRAY Ivor Ball, soon to reach his 100th birthday, is one of our forgotten D-Day veterans.

He was just a teenager when he was called up to serve in the Royal Navy, suffering the extreme hardships of the Arctic convoys and taking part in the bombardment of the Normandy beaches during the D-Day invasion which eventually led to the Allied victory in the Second World War.

Trevor Ball, 66, Murray's only son, spoke about his dad's life.

Murray, who will turn 100 on August 11, grew up in Giltbrook. Born in 1925, he joined the Navy in 1943 at the age of 18. He served aboard HMS Diadem, a light cruiser which participated in Arctic convoys, supported the Normandy Landings, conducted patrols off the Brittany coast and engaged in harassing German shipping in the North Sea.
