Residents' anger as drivers trying to avoid road closures use street as a cut-through

RESIDENTS living close to a large-scale road improvement scheme are complaining that motorists are trying to avoid road closures by cutting through their street and causing chaos as they create a rat-run.

Derby City Council announced at the weekend that the second phase of the Five Lamps project was starting, immediately closing Duffield Road outbound and Kedleston Road inbound, with motorists needing to follow a one-way diversion route along Kedleston Road (outbound), Broadway and Duffield Road.

But people living close to, or on Highfield Road, say that motorists cutting through from Duffield Road to Kedleston Road and vice-versa are making their lives difficult and fear that a serious accident could take place.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “I live on Kedleston Road but my vehicular access is from Highfield Road. The start of the work with no access from Kedleston Road to the Five Lamps junction has led to chaos with a significant increase of cars and vans using Highfield Road as a rat-run to gain access to Duffield Road.
