Library set to celebrate its 60th birthday after a £500,000 upgrade

SPONDON Library, which recently reopened after a £500,000 upgrade following a year's closure, is planning to celebrate what is believed to be its 60th birthday.

The library, in Sitwell Street, was opened by Derbyshire County Council in a new purpose-built facility in October 1965 after the old village hall housed a temporary library.
But last year it closed for a short time for safety reasons because of water leaking through the flat roof.
An investigation then revealed further problems.
Work, paid for by Derby City Council, was scheduled to last for six months but the severity of the work and delays meant that the library only opened and became operational again on August 12 after renovation and refurbishment costing £455,000
