Sprinkler and cladding rules for buildings converted into hotels after probe findings

- BY CHRIS MCCALL

A LAW aimed at improving fire safety in historic buildings is to be named after a young couple killed in a hotel blaze.

Sprinklers will become a mandatory requirement for traditional properties being converted into hotels if the legislation is passed by MSPs.

The law change follows recommendations from the fatal accident inquiry into the Cameron House fire in December 2017, which caused the deaths of Simon Midgley and Richard Dyson.

More than 200 guests were staying in the hotel on the banks of Loch Lomond when an initial fire alarm sounded at 6.40am.

Firefighters arrived within 10 minutes to find a "welldeveloped" fire in the mansion, near Balloch.

It was discovered that Simon, 32, and Richard, 38, were missing. Both had been killed by inhalation of smoke and fire gases.
