Students targeted in gambling crackdown

COVERT CAMERAS USED TO SHUT DOWN ILLEGAL DENS IN BIRMINGHAM

OVERSEAS students visiting gambling dens are being targeted by covert infrared cameras as police seek to shut the illicit activity down across Birmingham.

The force issued a picture of one such camera which monitors specially-marked cards on the poker table.

That information is then relayed to somebody at the table in order to cheat people out of cash.

Police said that overseas students are often targeted by organised criminals.

They gain influence over them through illegal gambling nights, which leads them being coerced into other criminal activities.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “We're issuing a warning about illegal gambling dens in Birmingham, as we continue our work to dismantle them.
